Statement from Trustees of Bushey Islamic Circle

A place for community, not division.
In light of recent commentary circulating within the local community, the trustees of Bushey Islamic Circle wish to respond in a clear, measured, and constructive manner. We recognise that such discussions can raise questions and concerns, and it is important that these are addressed openly, with clarity, and with a reaffirmation of our role within the Bushey community.
We recognise that when new initiatives or organisations emerge within a local area, it is natural for residents to seek reassurance. We welcome open, respectful, and informed dialogue, and believe that constructive engagement is essential to maintaining the strong sense of community that Bushey is known for.
Bushey Islamic Circle is a registered charity that has been active in the local area for the past four years. During this time, we have worked positively alongside existing faith groups and community organisations, including those situated along what is often referred to as Bushey’s “Multi-Faith Mile.” This reflects a long-standing local tradition of communities living side by side with mutual respect, cooperation, and shared civic values.
Our purpose is straightforward: to strengthen the local community through the provision of a place of worship and a welcoming space for education, youth engagement, and community activity. These activities focus on wellbeing, personal development, and service to society. Through this work, we aim not only to support our own community, but to contribute positively to the wider society of which we are proud to be a part.
We are aware that some concerns have been raised in relation to perceived associations or views. It is important to be clear that Bushey Islamic Circle is not a political organisation. We do not promote division, nor do we tolerate hatred, intimidation, or hostility towards any individual or community. While individuals may hold personal views on international matters, these do not define or dictate the purpose, governance, or activities of this charity.
We are deeply concerned by the wider rise in both Islamophobia and antisemitism across the United Kingdom. Acts of hatred or discrimination directed at any faith or community have no place in our society. We stand firmly in solidarity with all communities affected by prejudice and remain committed to the safety, dignity, and respect of every individual.
We are also mindful of recent incidents across the country that have caused concern and distress within communities, including attacks on services that exist to protect and support lives. Our thoughts are with all those affected. We recognise that such events can create a sense of unease, particularly for communities who may feel vulnerable to prejudice or hostility, and we stand firmly in support of the safety, dignity, and security of everyone in Bushey, regardless of background or belief.
Places of worship and community centres should be spaces of peace, reflection, support, and service. When any group feels unsafe because of who they are or what they believe, it weakens the unity of our society as a whole.
We believe strongly in the shared principles of mutual respect, inclusion, fairness, and the rule of law. These values reflect both the best of British civic life and the ethical principles that guide our community. In a diverse society, it is essential that these standards are applied consistently and fairly.
As trustees, we remain committed to:
• Supporting the wellbeing and development of the local community
• Promoting respectful dialogue and mutual understanding
• Working collaboratively with neighbours, faith groups, and local stakeholders
• Building bridges between communities through partnership, education, and engagement
We encourage all members of the community to:
• Reject hatred and discrimination in all its forms
• Support neighbours of different backgrounds and beliefs
• Engage in open and respectful dialogue
• Contribute positively to community cohesion
We welcome anyone who wishes to better understand our work to engage with us directly. Open and constructive conversation will always be more effective than assumption. At times of heightened tension, it is more important than ever that we choose compassion over division and cooperation over fear.
Bushey has long been a place where people of many backgrounds and traditions live together with respect and cooperation. We are proud to contribute to that tradition and remain committed to strengthening it for the benefit of all. Our presence is, and will continue to be, a positive and constructive asset to the Bushey community.
